The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has revised rules related to UPI. According to the report, a new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) framework for UPI will come into effect from October 15 for select merchant transactions. Under the new rules, payments made via UPI above Rs 2,000 will attract a charge of 0.4%. A maximum charge of around Rs 300 will apply per transaction. For transactions of Rs 75,000 or more, the MDR will be capped at a maximum of Rs 300 per transaction. However, no fee will be charged to customers for payments up to Rs 2,000. The source report does not clarify which 'select merchant' categories this charge will apply to, nor does it specify whether the fee will be borne by the customer or the merchant, leaving some ambiguity about the actual impact on the common user.
