As many as 37 lakh appeals related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal are reportedly pending. According to sources, if these appeals continue to be processed at the current rate, it could take around 12 years to clear the backlog. In light of this situation, the Election Commission (EC) has sought the setting up of additional tribunals to speed up the disposal of appeals. However, the report does not clarify the basis for the figure of 37 lakh appeals or the 12-year estimate, nor does it specify how many tribunals the EC has requested or from whom this request has been made. Further details are awaited.
