According to the Garuda Purana, after death, Yamdoots (messengers of Yama) take the soul to Yamlok. There, the soul is shown a complete account of its life, and the good and bad deeds performed during its lifetime are assessed. The Garuda Purana also states that within 24 hours of death, the soul returns once to its home — the very place where it left its body — and remains among its family.
